Aruba is widely regarded as one of the safest islands in the entire Caribbean. Check out the One Happy Island's Safety Update to find out why!

Aruba has been known as the One happy island for many years now and one of the reasons why Aruba makes people so happy is the peace of mind they experience while they’re here. In fact, Aruba is also known as one of the safest islands in the Caribbean for locals and visitors alike. But what exactly is it that allows vacationers to book a trip to this paradise island so free of worry? In this blog post, we will discuss all you need to know about Aruba travel safety.

Is Aruba Safe?

While many visitors come to Aruba year after year because of how safe they feel, we often get the question “how safe is Aruba really?” from first-timers. This is a totally valid question! It’s always important to properly research your vacation destination before you travel. Aruba is safe to visit for any type of traveler, from jet setters flying solo, to fun-loving families.

Some visitors have even expressed that they feel safer here than they do back home, and they have no Aruba travel concerns at all! Of course it is always important to remain alert and practice caution no matter where you are, and in that respect, Aruba is no exception. Towards the end of this blog post, we will provide some useful safety tips you can apply during your vacation.

What Makes Aruba Safe to Travel To?

Aruba tourist safety is crucial for the destination, but so is visitor peace of mind. So what exactly is it that makes people feel safe on our happy island? In the following section we will explore some of the reasons why visitors can be rest at ease during their Aruba vacation.

Getting Around Aruba

There are a few easy ways to access Aruba’s visitor hotspots. The hidden gems are not too hard to find either! Whether you choose to arrive by taxi, bus, or rental car, getting to the fun is easy in Aruba. Roads and signage are generally straight forward, and if you still cannot find your way, rest assured that a friendly local be available to help get you back on the right track. The island is currently dealing with many roads being under construction, this makes navigation a little more challenging than usual, but once construction is finalized, getting around should be even more of a breeze.

Easy Access to Hospitals & Emergency Services

Aruba has some exceptionally equipped medical facilities. Aside from the hospital and medical institute for ambulatory care, there is also a walk in clinic and an urgent care facility. Drug stores and pharmacies are plentiful and spread all across the island as well.

Since Aruba is small, it is important that international medical transfers for more complicated procedures are provided. While most services and emergency procedures can be handled on island, medical transportation is readily available, should it be needed.

Low Crime Rates

The Aruban community and visitors alike are very pleased with the low crime rate in Aruba. Of course, this does not mean nothing bad ever happens, it just means that it is less likely. Still, it is advised to always be alert and aware of your surroundings, not just at home, but also on vacation.

Friendly, Helpful Locals

The Aruban people are quite frankly the heart and soul of the happy island. Aruba has been welcoming visitors for a very long time, which automatically turned the local community into a big group of hosts, tour guides, and storytellers. They understand the importance of visits to the island for the local economy, but aside from this, they want to share their slice of paradise with the world. While our beaches are stunning, we can absolutely credit the community for all the repeat visits.

Most Arubans speak English, Dutch, Spanish and Papiamento. In addition, The Aruban community consists of people from all over the world, so chances are, you’ll find someone that speaks your language. As mentioned before, the Aruban people pride themselves in being friendly and welcoming. Don’t hesitate to have a chat with some of the locals, they have the best tips on how to experience the essence of Aruba.

Family Cruise

Outside the Hurricane Belt

Aruba’s position outside the hurricane belt makes it a great destination to visit year-round. Visitors can plan their vacation any time of the year without having to worry about weather safety. If there is a hurricane passing in the region we can get some rain showers, but they usually clear up quickly. You’ll be back to drinking cocktails on the beach before you know it.

Potable Tap Water

Not everyone knows this, but Aruba’s tap water is safe to drink and meets the highest standards set by the World Health Organization! This a luxury we tend to take for granted, because for locals, this is the norm. Not only is using tap water convenient and easy, it also saves you a lot of money and reduces litter. Consider bringing or buying a reusable water bottle, and you’re all set!

General Aruba Safety Tips for Tourists

While Aruba is generally safe, there are still some aspects that should be kept in mind to protect yourself and your loved ones. Here’s a list of our top Aruba safety tips!

Do Not Drink & Drive

Under no circumstance should anyone ever drink and drive. It’s common to have that extra drink while on vacation. It’s vacation after all! But getting behind the wheel after is extremely dangerous and of course, illegal. If you’re staying in the Palm Beach area, many bars, restaurants, and clubs are located within easy walking distance. If you need to travel a little further, then have a host or a bartender call you a cab, they’d be happy to do so!

Wear Sunscreen & Drink Lots of Water!

One of the main reasons people love to visit the happy island is because of Aruba’s pleasant sunny weather. As much as we love fun in the sun, remember that UV rays can be damaging and the heat can cause dehydration. On you trip to Aruba, health should remain a top priority. Be sure to wear sunscreen free of harmful chemicals, sunglasses and clothing that keeps you cool and protected from the sun. Drinking lots of water and staying hydrated is very important too. You may not realize you’re overheating because of the cooling trade winds, but please take care! If you’re well prepared, you can enjoy the outdoors to your heart’s content.

Only Take Off-Road Vehicles to Designated Areas

Aruba has some must-visit natural wonders that can be accessed with an off-road vehicle. There are also some great tour and rental companies that will allow you to rent such a vehicle and explore. It is very important that rules are followed during your Aruba adventures. Only drive the vehicles on the designated routes on your way to the sights, and only drive on the indicated paths while in the nature areas. These points are stressed not only for your safety, but also for the safety and preservation of Aruba’s flora and fauna.

Pay Attention to Undercurrent Signs

Who doesn’t love going to the Aruba’s beautiful beaches? After all, our island features pristine white sand beaches, and inviting blue waters. In most places, it’s just perfect for swimming, as long as it’s done safely! Never venture beyond the buoys as currents can pick up quickly.

Some beaches and coves on the north coast are also not for swimming at all! This will be indicated by signs. Don’t ignore them! Currents can get so strong that even the most skilled swimmers can be swept away.
